#1: Change Your Mindset – Sugar is Poison

For me, I completed shifted my worldview to where I now consider sugar and alcohol as poisonous to my body. Consuming carbs is no longer an option that is even on the table for me.

#2: Have a Reason 

To stick with keto, you need an underlying motivation whether its weight loss, increased energy, or improved mental clarity.

My primary reason for sticking with keto is it reversed my neuropathy. The improved energy levels and increased mental clarity are also major perks.

#3: Your Family Must Support You

Before I adapted to a ketogenic lifestyle, I made sure that my wife and kids understood my rationale and that they supported me.  This is a big change for them too regardless of whether they go keto. My wife and kids do eat carbs, but signficiantly less than they did before. They will often eat a salad for lunch and they almost always eat the same keto friendly recipe that I enjoy for dinner.

Am I in Ketosis?

When your body switches its primary fuel source from carbs to fat (will take 2-3 days the first time) your body will begin producing ketones to break down the fat. One sugary salad dressing or a piece of fruit can kick you out of ketosis.

So, how do you know if you are in ketosis? Keto Strips are pee strips that you can buy at any local pharmacy or online at Amazon. Simply urinate on the strip, and if the color darkens, then your body is producing ketones. The darker the color the better.

I get asked all the time, what do you eat in a typical day?

Breakfast

I always share an avocado (healthy source of fat!) with my girls. To mix it up, I will eat either eggs or Noatmeal. As a special treat, we may enjoy keto waffles or pancakes once a week.

Lunch

My lunch is always a large salad. You will find that vegetables are more flavorful once you break your carb addiction. My typical salad consists of:

  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Hot Peppers from Potbelly’s
  • Grape Tomatoes
  • Cheese
  • Sliced Almonds
  • Garbanzo Beans
  • Cucumbers
  • Onions
  • Peppers
  • Olives
  • Dressing Options:
    • Olive Oil
    • Red Wine Vinaigrette

Be careful not to use a sugary dressing or load up on root vegetables!

Snacks

Almonds is my go to snack. Olives, Macadamia nuts, cheese sticks, hummus and veggies, and protein chips are also great options. Early in my keto days, I would make a weekly batch of fat bombs.

Dinner

Dinner time is your opportunity to mix it up. Keto Recipes are generally easier to cook because they only have a few recipes, but they are alos more flavorful. Here are some of my favorites:

Drinks

I only drink water, hot tea, and black coffee. Similar to vegetables, hot tea will also become more flavorful once you break your addiction to carbs.

Alcohol is off limits for me. Vodka is technically “keto friendly”, but I found that adapting to a healthier keto was a great opportunity for me to stop drinking.

Eating out?

When travelling or eating out, I will typically settle on a customized salad or vegetarian omelet. I will always add an avocado and switch out the salad dressings to oil and/or vinaigrette. Most cafes will let you switch out the carby sides for an avocado or greens. I will sometimes order a black bean burger patty with an avocado, or a burrito bowl (no rice, light black beans, plenty of veggies) from Chipotle or Qdoba.

My Story – How Keto Saved My Life

I suffered from neuropathy (tingling hands, feet, and brain, fatigue, sensitivity to hot & cold) for ten years….until I tried Keto. I was desperate after seeing four neurologists, undergoing multiple MRI’s, and getting every lab work and test imaginable. Each neurologist offered drugs to numb the pain. Not ONE brought up diet as a root cause.

Within three days of switching to the keto diet, my energy levels came back, and the 24/7 tingling of my head, hands, and feet diminished by more than 90%.

After a decade of immense uncertainty and suffering, keto has given me a new life. I feel great for the first time in a very long time. Oh yeah, and I lost 40 pounds in my first three months on keto.
